For over 15 years, Classic Recreations has been delivering classic Shelby Mustang style with modern performance and reliability. Their models are meticulously restored and upgraded from the 1960s Mustang’s they are based upon. Now, however, they are looking to push the boundaries of what a restomod classic Mustang can be with their new carbon fiber Shelby Mustang GT500CR.
Usually reserved for modern performance cars, carbon fiber is light, strong and incredibly pretty when used well. One company knows this better than anyone, and it’s Wisconsin based SpeedKore. Since 2015, SpeedKore has been producing carbon components and full carbon bodies for new and classic American performance cars. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before a collaboration between these two great companies happened, and the results look spectacular.
The carbon fiber Shelby Mustang GT500CR begins with an original 1967 or 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 body that undergoes a full restoration. The body is then sent to SpeedKore, where they blue light scan the body and mold the new carbon fiber panels. That body is attached to a restored steel chassis tub.
The result is a full carbon fiber bodied Shelby Mustang, the first of its kind to be officially licensed. The carbon bodied car is stronger and lighter than before, and all the panels will have perfect carbon fiber weave alignment thanks to SpeedKore’s talents.
The rest of the car can be optioned like any other of Classic Restoration’s current vehicle lineup. Engines range from a 490 hp Ford Coyote crate engine all the way up to 900 hp, hand-built 427-cubic-inch V8 engine. Regardless of engine, the Shelby Mustangs, carbon or not, are hooked up to a Tremec five-speed manual as standard with an automatic optional. They also all get a custom Magnaflow exhaust.
Handling isn’t forgotten, either. All models get rack and pinion power steering, Wilwood Racing brakes, sway bars, coiler suspension, and a range of wheel and tire options. Carbon bodied cars will get carbon fiber wheels, of course.
Classic Recreations haven’t announced pricing for this carbon Shelby Mustang, but expect it to be very high. Both companies will also team up once again for a run of carbon fiber Shelby Cobras, so stay tuned for more information on those in due course.
