For years, muscle cars had more interest than any other classic American vehicle. But as trucks and SUVs have overtaken cars in new sales, enthusiasts have a bigger interest in classic off-roaders than ever before. The Ford Bronco is the best example of this. Ever since the new model was announced, classic Broncos have shot up in value, and are far more desirable than ever before. But if this can happen to the Bronco, what other classic SUVs and trucks could also become the next great collectable? If you ask Magnus Walker, the famed Porsche restomod wizard, it might just be the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.

In the latest episode of the Haggerty series, the Next Big Thing, Walker checks out all things Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. He says he’s always admired the classic Bronco and International Scout, but the Wagoneer has always stood out.

Walker first looked at a 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, one that is in beautiful condition but bone stock. Being a Grand Wagoneer, it’s the premium model. Back in the day, it was really America’s first luxury SUV. It has power seats, lots of leather, and of course, wood paneling on the side. There was nothing better for a family road trip in its day.

But if you’re familiar with Magnus Walker and his Porsche portfolio, you’ll know the stock chassis, suspension and 144 hp V8 aren’t quite what he has in mind. That’s why he swaps to the Jeep Easter Safari Wagoneer Roadtrip concept from 2018.

Based on a 1965 Jeep Wagoneer, almost everything is modernized under the skin. The engine is a Hemi crate engine pushing out 350 hp, and the leaf springs are swapped for modern coil suspension. The chassis has even been lengthened, and the axles are Dana 44 locking axles are from a Wrangler. It’s a dream overland restomod.

Prices for a classic Jeep Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer range anywhere between $10,000 to $80,000 depending on year, mileage and specific model. But a quick sweep on Hemmings listings shows several nice examples around the $30,000 mark. If these do catch on as the next major classic SUV, especially with a new model inbound, there’s a possibility prices could rise. But if the video shows us anything, it’s that the Wagoneer is a great classic SUV than any enthusiast can love and drive on or off-road, stock or modified. Check it out below:
