WHAT’S UNDERNEATH THE 2023 GMC SIERRA 1500 AT4X AEV?

Lots of Protection From Protruding Rocks

When GM announced the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition, we knew it would take the luxurious full-size truck to new heights. As the most factory-capable pickup truck that Big Red has ever offered, there’s plenty of reason to get excited. We’ve heard about all of the significant updates American Expedition Vehicles has added to the large truck, but seeing is often better to get a complete picture.

2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Underbody: Details

Our friends at TFL recently got ahold of a legendary 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition, and one of the first things they did was lift it in the air to see all of the goodies underneath to take the Sierra from the lap of luxury to the lap of luxury and extreme capability. Unless you want to watch the process of lifting the truck into the air, we recommend starting the video at 6:30. From there. We start at the front, which showcases the new front bumper for the GMC Sierra AT4X AEV, which features a higher profile to allow for an improved approach angle.

The hot-stamped boron steel skid plates are 3.5 times stronger than an equivalent cold-stamped high-strength steel part. It also provides incredible resistance to gouging and bending, which is essential for those protruding rocks. The boron steel front and rear bumpers on the 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition are constructed of 3mm, heavy-duty steel and are powder and e-coated for durability and UV and corrosion resistance.

We can see that the 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV has the vast majority of the undercarriage covered with the skidplate, though, as pointed out in the video, the transmission catch can and engine catch can appear to be exposed. It’s unclear why a small section of the undercarriage wasn’t covered, but it was likely to make maintenance on the vehicle easier. Speaking of maintenance, the half shaft appears to feature some rust on the surface. The same thing was spotted on the underside of an F-150, and Ford said it was a cosmetic that didn’t affect the component’s strength. That may also be the case here, though we can’t see how rust is cosmetic.

The 2023 Sierra At4X AEV features 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires with a full-size spare underneath, and it’s possible that a 35-inch spare could fit in its place, given that there’s about an inch of room around the current spare. That should do wonders to improve the capability of the full-size truck even more.

Zac's love for cars started at a young age, after seeing the popular Eleanor from Gone In 60 Seconds. From there, fascination and enthusiasm blossomed and to this day the Ford Mustang remains a favorite. His first job started out detailing cars, but also provided the opportunity to work on restoration including an 1968 Ford Mustang, Pontiac Firebird, and a C3 Corvette, though he left that job before further work and experience could be had. From there, he was a detailer at a car dealership before quitting that job to try and finish college.

Much of his free time while studying was spent watching YouTube videos regarding new cars, or off-roading. 4WD247 is a personal favorite channel which rekindled a dying flame in car enthusiasm, now tailored towards trucks and SUVs and the fun that can be had building up an overlanding rig, and going on adventures, though, that chapter remains unwritten for the time being.
