Jeep has given us pictures of the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug in-hybrid. The introduction of the hybrid SUV came as part of the Stellantis EV Day where the company laid out it’s clear and comprehensive electrification strategy going forward. The hybrid WL Grand Cherokee is yet another big step towards the intent of making Jeep the “greenest” SUV brand on the planet. The variant we see here today is the standard wheelbase, 2-row Grand Cherokee that will launch later this year.
What We Know About The Grand Cherokee 4xe So Far
The new WL Grand Cherokee shares the same general design as its larger Jeep Grand Cherokee L counterpart, only it’s got a wheelbase to accommodate two rows of seating, not three. The initial color scheme Jeep gives the SUV in the photos give it a clean, futuristic look; the white-painted body panels and bumpers against the black pillars and roof are an interesting design decision reminiscent of typical supercar styling.
While there’s not many details about the powertrain of the hybrid SUV, there are two schools of thought. The first is that the Grand Cherokee 4xe will borrow its hybrid system from the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, utilizing a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine and two electric motors. We’ve also covered the possibility of the Grand Cherokee lineup using a new “Tornado” turbocharged inline-six cylinder named the GME-T6, paired with a plug-in hybrid electric system.
All of this electrification comes sprinkled with reports that the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk won’t be receiving a Hellcat 6.2L supercharged V8 engine.
The EV Party Is Only Getting Bigger
Stellantis isn’t wasting time when it comes to hybridization and electrification of its brands, investing an astonishing $30 billion USD through 2025 for future electric vehicles. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is helping set records for Wrangler sales, and Jeep has already hinted at a Gladiator 4xe. Adding on, Dodge has teased an all-electric muscle car by 2024, what could be a Dodge Hornet EV during Stellantis EV Day, and an all-electric Ram 1500 pickup also by 2024. More details will come soon as the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is officially unveiled at the New York International Auto Show in late August.
