Up until recently, Ford had free-range over the off-road pickup market here in the States. And while it’s hard not to like Ford’s Baja-inspired F-150 Raptor or their Super Duty Tremor, not every truck buyer is willing to jump brands so easily. Thankfully for the large contingent of Ram faithful out there, FCA has finally created a few Raptor-rivals of their own via the Ram 1500 Rebel and TRX. They’ve even built a Heavy Duty off-roader by way of the Ram HD Power Wagon, backed by a storied 75 year history. But did you know that FCA will sell you a more affordable HD off-roader? Meet the 2021 Ram 2500 Tradesman with the Power Wagon Package.

Between the entry-level Tradesman, the standard Power Wagon trim, and the collectable Power Wagon 75th Anniversary Edition, Ram will sell you this mighty off-road package in three different ways. The package itself runs $7,995 USD.

The 2021 Ram 2500 Tradesman with the Power Wagon Package doesn’t have as many visual tweaks as its bigger brother. You get a set of 17-inch Diamond Cut wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber, as well as Bright bumper treatments front and rear. The wheel centers and fender flares are also given a coat of black paint, and a set of fog lights are added up front. Beyond that, the truck presents mostly looking like a taller Tradesmen. Unlike other Power Wagon models however, the Ram 2500 Tradesman is available in all 13 of Ram’s low-volume exterior paint colors for $450 extra.

Like every 2021 Ram HD Power Wagon Package, this upgraded Tradesman is powered by a 6.4L V8 engine producing 410 horsepower and 429 ft-lb of torque. That power is sent to all four wheels via an 8HP75 8-speed automatic transmission. Like its siblings, the truck rides 2-inches higher on a Ram Articulink Suspension system, and features performance-tuned off-road shocks at all four corners. It also features some trick Tru-Lock front and rear axles, as well as a disconnecting front sway bar. No need to worry about underbody damage on the trails either, as this package brings the armor for the fuel tanks and transfer case. Should you run into some obstacles you are outmatched by, the truck also comes with a front mounted WARN winch and Hill Descent Control capabilities.

Add the $7,995 Power Wagon Package to the 2021 Ram 2500 Tradesman 4×4, and you are left with an MSRP of just $50,240. That is a little more than $3,000 cheaper than the starting price for the standard Ram HD Power Wagon. You do pay for those savings on the interior however, where things remain as basic as they come. That said, who wants to worry about mucking up a nice interior when you are off-roading in a 2021 Ram HD?

The standard 2021 Ram HD Power Wagon Package features all of the upgraded hardware included in the lower-level package, but also brings some distinct styling changes. Inspired by the Ram 1500 Rebel’s design, the truck features a unique bumper and grille treatment, as well as a Power Wagon graphics package. The interior is also improved over the Tradesman, thanks to a unique tire-tread print found on the cloth seats. Buyers can now spec a $295 rotary-style transfer case selector for the 2021 model year, though the traditional knob still comes as standard. The truck carries a base price of $53,535, but options can quickly increase your spending.

However, if you demand a fancy interior and lots of tech inside you off-roader,  look no further than the top-of-the-line Ram HD Power Wagon 75th Anniversary Edition. New for the 2021 model year, this commemorative truck celebrates the Power Wagon nameplate and its military service. Ram has fit this Anniversary model with a black grille mesh and a Gunmetal grille badge, premium headlamps with Gloss Black surrounds, and black rock rails with side-step capability. They’ve also applied unique “Power Wagon 75 Years of Service” door badges, as well as Diamond Black door and tailgate graphics. 17-inch bead-lock capable wheels borrowed from the TRX wrapped in 33-inch rubber round of the visual tweaks. The package does allow buyers to spec one of two new exclusive color options: Anvil and Molten Orange.

Inside, the Ram HD Power Wagon 75th Anniversary Edition stands miles ahead of its stablemates. You’ll find a premium Mountain Brown leather interior, gloss black accents, a 12-inch Uconnect infotainment screen complete with Off-Road Pages, and a 17-speaker Harman Kardon sound system as standard equipment. The seats feature “Power Wagon 75” logos up front, in case you forget which truck you bought. All of this added luxury isn’t cheap however, as the truck carries an MSRP of $65,250 before destination charges. A 702-horsepower Ram 1500 TRX isn’t much more expensive than that, but it isn’t built on the HD platform.

  1. I will definitely be getting a new Power Wagon. I used to go hunting with a buddy in his decades ago and I have wanted one since.
